The Sheffield culture guide written by in-the-know locals

Zeugma

Zeugma, 146 London Road, S2 4LR

Open every day 12-11:30pm

Head to this atmospheric place for the most authentic Turkish fare, served fresh from the open grill.

Everyone we know who's eaten at Zeugma has loved it, and most generally have a favourite dish. The OFP team usually plump for an adana or iskander, but as well as the array of meaty kebabs lined up on the open grill, the restaurant also has some great veggie offerings.

Zeugma is famed in Sheffield for its vegetarian kebab – a feast on a plate consisting of beautifully grilled aubergine and mushrooms, rice, hummus and halloumi – but their menu rewards the adventurous.

Try the imam bayildi (aubergine in olive oil), which is cooked long and slow and comes served with a delicious slick of creamy Turkish yoghurt. You might have trouble saving room though, as the selection of starters will leave you spoilt for choice. My favourites are kisir (spicy bulgur wheat with walnuts), cali fasulye (green beans in a tomato sauce) and muskaborgei (light parcels of feta and parsley).

Take some friends and order plenty for the table. Careful if you get sat next to the grill though, it's HOT!

Being many Sheffielders favourite restaurant it's often busy so book ahead or try their second restaurant, Zeugma Iki, a little down the road at number 108.
